The South Gobi
Gobi Desert is in
560 km south of Ulaanbaatar:
the hottest and driest area
of Mongolia, which covers
30 % of Mongolian territory,
holds many thrilling surprises
because once it was an ancient
inland sea, Gobi is rich with
paleonthological discoveries,
such as fossilized dinosaur's
eggs, bones despite its harsh
environment. Dramatic cliffs,
sand dunes stretching thousands
of miles, rocky mountains,
flat dry plains with semi-shrubs,
oasis's with poplars and saxaul
trees cover the Gobi . It
supports diverse array of
wild bird and animal life;
the main representatives of
desert fauna are black-tailed
antelopes and white antelopes,
Mongolian gazelles, Khavtgai
- wild Bactrian camels, snow
leopards, Gobi bears (Mazaalai),
ibex and Argalis - wild mountain
sheep. The sites of Gobi are
varied and impressive: Yolyn
Canyon - amazing canyon and
a glacier in the middle of
a desert, spectacular 20 km
wide, 100 km long sea of sand
- Khongoryn Els, Mount Sevrei
River which creates oasis
and forest of saxaul trees.
