Erdene zuu monastery in Khara-Khorum

Khara–Khorum is in 380 km from Ulaanbaatar . Erdene Zuu Monastery was founded by King Avtai Sain Khan in 1586 as the first Buddhist Monastery in Mongolia on the ruins of Khara Khorum – 13 th century Capital City of the Mongolian Empire. The Monastery is surrounded by walls with length of 400 m with 108 stupas and 4 gates. Khara Khorum was built in 1220 on the cross-roads of the Silk Road which connected East with West. Erdene Zuu Monastery retains Buddhist architecture, lama rituals and has excellent collections of Tankas, Masks for Tsama dancing, wooden, bronze and golden statues, appliques and mineral paintings of Gods created by Mongolian masters of 18 th century.

Khorgo – Terhiin Tsagaan Lake
Khorgo /460 km away/ is the most picturesque area with ancient extinct volcano on 900 m above the Terhiin Tsagaan Lake . The area is covered by poplar and peach forest, where wild berries, rare herbs and flowers grow. Terhiin Tsagaan fresh water lake was formed by lavas flow during the ancient volcano activity. There are many nice places to relax such as sandy beaches, sunny edges of the forest. The place is very famous for its amble, strong yaks and beautiful singing birds and friendly people.

Amarbayasgalant Monastery
Near the Selenge River, in Iven Valley , at the foot of Mount Buren-Khaan is one of the largest Buddhist centers in Mongolia , is called the “Monastery of Tranquil Felicity”. The monastery was built in 1727-7136 by Zanabazar - the First Bogdo Khaan, religious and cultural leader of Mongolia . Unlike the Erdene Zuu Monastery which is composed of an ensemble of temple halls of different styles, Amarbayasgalant shows great stylistic unity and beauty with the overall Chinese style and some Mongolian and Tibetian influence.

The plan is symmetrical, and the main buildings succeed one another along a north – south axis, while the secondary buildings are laid out on parallel side axis.
