Erdene
zuu monastery in Khara-Khorum
Khara–Khorum is in 380 km
from Ulaanbaatar. Erdene Zuu
Monastery was founded by King
Avtai Sain Khan in 1586 as
the first Buddhist Monastery
in Mongolia on the ruins of
Khara Khorum – 13 th century
Capital City of the Mongolian
Empire. The Monastery is surrounded
by walls with length of 400
m with 108 stupas and 4 gates.
Khara Khorum was built in
1220 on the cross-roads of
the Silk Road which connected
East with West. Erdene Zuu
Monastery retains Buddhist
architecture, lama rituals
and has excellent collections
of Tankas, Masks for Tsama
dancing, wooden, bronze and
golden statues, appliques
and mineral paintings of Gods
created by Mongolian masters
of 18 th century.
